Cycling "Le Vieux Chemin du Cap-Rouge"
Unfortunately, at this point there are only a few official bike trails in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. However, the plans are out there to create a new network of trails for mountain biking in the years to come so let’s keep our fingers crossed that this will happen!
"Le Vieux Chemin du Cap Rouge" is one of these official cycling trails in the national park and it is also the most challenging one. There are definitely some steeper sections, but there's also a ton of fun downhill parts!!
Cecilia and I decided to take our mountain bikes here in the late fall. It was a pretty chilly day, but the colors were still beautiful and we warmed up pretty quickly after a few climbs. For a good part of the trail you get to enjoy an ocean view while coasting along over a trail which is actually part of the original Cabot Trail. There are some old foundations along this path and you can definitely sense some history here.
My favourite part was toward the end of the trail when you get to a little bridge and cross over a stream. You follow that stream for a bit and it was just really soothing to bike along this part. We really loved biking this trail and can’t wait to get back here! The only slight drawback of the trail is that it is a one way and not a loop. So you have the choice of biking back on the road, but we decided to turn back and do the trail again!
